Integrated Technology

The Winston School uses Google Workspace for Education, offering students and staff opportunities to capture and share stories and essays, research and data, presentations, websites, drawings and much more. The Google platform integrates seamlessly with our learning management system, Schoology. Through Schoology, students and faculty are able to engage in feedback loops for course assignments, differentiated assessments, and multi-dimensional projects. We offer students, parents, and faculty a one-stop-shop where they can access all of our digital platforms and important school content through our Veracross student, parent and employee portals.

Winston has earned the status of being a Common Sense School, an honor that recognizes our efforts in teaching digital citizenship to young people and engaging the entire school community in this important discussion. The recognition acknowledges our school's commitment to helping students build skills that are essential for their well-being today and for the opportunities they'll have tomorrow.

We are one of the more than 80,000 schools across the country that use Common Sense Education's groundbreaking education resources. As a result, our students are better equipped to navigate the digital world and use devices for learning.

This honor is provided by Common Sense Education, part of a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.

Digital media and technology are evolving at a dizzying pace, both unlocking extraordinary opportunities and posing real risks for young people. Students are using the immense power of the internet and mobile technology to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined, both in and out of the classroom. At the same time, tech use can bring up ethical challenges such as cyberbullying and misinformation and health issues related to media balance and social and emotional well-being.

The Winston School sees these as teachable moments. We believe that digital citizenship skills have become essential for students in the 21st century. That's why we are committed to teaching our students how to be digital learners, leaders, and citizens.

Applications for Academic Enrichment

All faculty at Winston receive training and coaching in technology integration. In addition to our standard suite of tools, the technology department works with teachers individually to provide supplemental applications when needed for academic enrichment.  For example, teachers use Newsela for current events and literacy, BrainPOP for interactive lessons and content-specific activities, Canva for digital design, and GoGuardian for Chromebook management in the classroom.

Innovation Studio

The Innovation Studio is a hands-on, prototyping space that was designed by Winston students to be the School’s center of innovation and creativity. The Studio is a collaborative space for teachers and students to bring ideas that they are passionate about to life. The space fosters the solving of real-world problems through digital fabrication, rapid prototyping, and the design thinking process. The Studio has tools such as 3D printers, a laser printer, CNC mill, vinyl cutter, and basic woodworking tools to facilitate the creation process. Students understand that things will not always go as expected in the Innovation Studio. Failing multiple times is part of the process when working to find a successful solution and an improved understanding. In the Innovation Studio we teach students to take control of their own learning.
