Transforming Lives Since 1975
Fifty years ago The Winston School opened its doors with a bold vision: to create a place where students with learning differences could thrive.
The 50th Logo: Why the Butterfly?
The monarch butterfly holds a special place in the heart of The Winston School community. It’s more than a symbol—it's a reflection of our story.
When The Winston School opened in 1975, the monarch butterfly was a part of the School's original logo (pictured left). Our early athletic teams were called The Flyers, a nod to the butterfly’s grace, strength, and upward momentum.
But the butterfly is more than just a piece of our history—it’s a powerful metaphor for the transformation that happens here every day.
Like a butterfly’s metamorphosis, our students enter Winston full of potential. In the right environment—where they are understood, supported, and celebrated—they grow, gain confidence, and take flight. They leave not only prepared for the next academic challenge, but transformed as empowered learners and self-advocates.
As we mark 50 years of helping students with learning differences discover their strengths, the butterfly returns as a fitting symbol of our legacy—and of the incredible journeys still to come.

Greatness Comes in All Shapes & Sizes
As a part of the 50th celebration we've enhanced architectural elements of the school with the logo and inspirational messaging. As you enter campus, you'll notice the columns in front of the Lays Administration Building have been wrapped and feature stories of inspiring people (and even one amazing dog!) who faced challenges and rose above them. Each one reminds our community that determination, courage, resilience, and kindness can lead to incredible achievements. We see these attributes in our students and faculty everyday, and each of these individuals serve as a reminder to perservere and live authentically. To make it even more fun, we’ve included their heights so you can see how you measure up—because greatness comes in all sizes.
Special thanks to parent Alan Daniel who provided his design expertise for this project.
Your Place. Your People. Your Path.
The mural overlooking the Tollway (pictured above), the flutter flags around campus, and the lightpole banners showcasing students all feature our 50th tagline. This tagline was created to highlight the importance of finding a place where you belong and people who truly understand and support you. When students feel seen, valued, and connected, they gain the confidence to explore their strengths, take risks, and discover their own unique path. This tagline celebrates the idea that belonging and community are the foundation for personal growth, learning, and success. We believe this sentiment is not only a nod to our past but also what guides the future path of The Winston School.
Special thanks to board member Ken Womack for lending his design services in creation of the Tollway mural.
