Winston Solar

The Winston Solar Science Academy is an elite program for Winston students interested in an in-depth, hands-on understanding of STEM – science, technology, engineering, math and alternative energy. Solar Science participants experience building, maintaining, and driving a solar car, participate in solar car races on a closed track and on the open road in a cross-country race, and learn business skills, and team building.

This year is a very exciting year for the team as they are returning to the track after the cancelations related to COVID-19. For years Winston Solar has participated in the Solar Car Challenge, in Fort Worth, Texas at the world-famous Texas Motor Speedway. The mission is simple: to design, build and drive a custom car powered by solar energy and batteries that competitively completes the race with incredible fuel efficiency. The team has been successful in their efforts, year after year, building and upgrading a car from the frame up, passing scrutiny and completing 144 laps around the track. Be sure to stay up-to-date with our parent newsletter. The 2021-2022 school year is a race year, so we are looking forward to sharing the incredible things that our students are doing with Winston Solar!
