The Winston Solar Science Academy is an elite program for Winston students interested in an in-depth, hands-on understanding of STEM – science, technology, engineering, math and alternative energy. Solar Science participants experience building, maintaining, and driving a solar car, participate in solar car races on a closed track and on the open road in a cross-country race, and learn business skills, and team building.
This year, was a very exciting year for the team as they returned to the track after almost 10 years participating in the Solar Car Challenge July 15th – 22nd, in Fort Worth, Texas at the world-famous Texas Motor Speedway. Their mission was simple: to design, build and drive a custom car powered by solar energy and batteries that competitively completes the race with incredible fuel efficiency. The team was successful in their efforts building a car from the frame up, passing scrutiny and completing 144 laps around the track. This team was passionate, determined and understands, “there is no gain, without pain.” Congratulations Winston Solar!
